I have had many questions about slow eater problems. My readers tell me that they spend the day preparing for the party and expect that all will go well. The dinner hour arrives, everyone is seated, they begin to eat but there is that one person who only puts a small item on their fork and proceeds to chat and chat and chat. At this point in time everyone is finished except the talker. Now our hostess has a dilemma for she knows she cannot clear the dinner plates until everyone has finished eating.
There are some solutions to this problem. Sometimes just staring the person down works or drumming your fingers on the table and humming can be helpful. Perhaps a better solution is to announce that the dessert will be served in five minutes. Hopefully that will speed up our eater. If all this fails simply grab the eater's plate and storm off to the kitchen.
Well I hope this bit advice will be of help. Till the next blog remember good manners are never out of date.
Good advise Maisy!
ReplyDeleteI have a question. I have dietary restrictions. What is the best way to make my host/ess aware of those restrictions before they go to all the trouble of preparing me a dinner that I can't eat?
Dear Maisy,
ReplyDeleteWhat do I do about people who chew with their mouth open?
I feel comfortable to address this with someone I know well, but I recently became friends with someone who obnoxiously chews with their mouth open and talks while eating, etc. I don't know him well enough to feel comfortable to say something. What do I do?!?!
Thanks,
Gilly
rooskychick, Thanks for your question. Since you have dietary restrictions, I am sure your host or hostess would like to know. Since I don't know what you can and can't eat, I would suggest that you offer to bring a dish that you can share to go along with what they are serving. If they don't like your limitations concerning food then decline gracefully. Remember always be a lady.
ReplyDeleteGilly, I got your message and this is a big problem that I'll address in my next blog.
ReplyDeletethis is a great blog! so needed! thank you for the invaluable tips Maisy!!!
ReplyDeleteCan you write a blog about gift giving since it is the season? For example: Do I have to give everyone something? What are cheap alternatives? How can you tell if someone is mad they didn't get a gift? What should I do for business associates besides sweets?
thanks for your help.
